And regarding shame, I used to have this theory that people who painted in layers were like shoplifters. Concealing things on your body is sort of what you’re doing when you make painting, because you’re always covering up earlier layers and the paintings go out into the world with little secrets or messages, or little secret phalluses or fetishes, kind of buried inside the layers I guess I have a really complex relationship to paintings emotionally. It’s agressive, I’m fighting a lot, and maybe you can sense all of that, too.
