Phallus update 2

Louise Bourgeois by Robert MapplethorpePeaches Christ SuperstarJutta Koether, Isabelle
Bruce LaBruce, Danko Jones, Legs, 2013, Videostill

Portrait von Louise Bourgeois by Robert Mapplethorpe, Peaches Christ Superstar, Jutta Koether „Isabelle“, Bruce LaBruce Danko Jones Legs Videostill

Aus Praxes HAND OUT N°3, CYCLE 1:

In the third, culminating component of Koether’s exhibition cycle, the framed, deep-hued Isabelle commands the stage. A pink and orange phallus painted in the quickly-drying „instant“ medium of gouache, Isabelle appears not so much as an emblem of patriarchy and fetishism, but is rather a disruptive, fluid force – a jouissance with the power to even shape its own frame. Evoking a rich history of works investigating the phallus as parody, pun, and pose (Louise Bourgeois’ Fillette, Marcel Duchamp’s Objet-Dard, and Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirror Room – Phalli’s Field (or Floor Show) come to mind, all produced in the 1950-60s), the phallus of Isabelle is an action-ready, self-possessed, reliably magical object. No longer part of a male body but with a female name, adorned with testicles resembling breasts (and the apples in another work occasionally on display in this exhibition), Isabelle could be seen as what Kleinian psychologists might call a combined parent figure – a hybrid or unity of opposites that is less sweetly erotic than frighteningly self-generative.

Travis Jeppesen on Peaches Christ Superstar:

Not that there wasn’t any reason to complain: Number one was the gigantic cross that appeared at the end. The work of Andreas Golder, it looked fantastic — a great purple blobby mess of bones, flesh, and organs, crowned with a giant penis. But could the symbolism be more heavy-handed? (Headed?)

Keilrahmen forever?

Während ich noch überlege ob ich zu einer der drei painting forever! Eröffnungen gehen soll hat Despina Stokou einen Erfahrungsbericht geposted:

-Would Ellen like to visit my current show in Mitte, see how everything is installed in space…

-You understand of course that with so many artists Ellen does not have time to visit everybody.

Ahm, yeah… but maybe not everybody has a show running now…

-Of course

-Could I use a shelf or a little podest in space. I rarely hang the canvases you know, they always lean on something.

-No, the paintings should hang within the limitation of their own material.

This show feels like a punishment.

-Ok

– We need a picture of your work. Not for the catalogue, there will only be photos of the installation in there, but still, maybe we will need it for the press.

-This show is adressing a younger generation of viewers, who are not aware what painting is.

Didn’t they doodle on the iPad?

____________________________________________

Later I met Ellen in Basel and got to know a bit more.
-Yeah this is a show I inherited from my predecessor and now I am trying to do…

Your worst. You are trying to do your worse aren’t you…

Keith Boadwee and Club Paint in Berlin

Ich bin seit langem ein Fan (noch ein anderer) von Keith Boadwee. Zusammen mit Erin Allen und Isaac Gray malt Keith Boadwee gemeinschaftlich Bilder unter dem Label „Club Paint“:

Each member is present in the studio during the sessions and the paintings are handed around. Generally, all three members work on each painting. However, not every painting is touched by every member but editorial or critical input is considered as much as actual physical labor.

Hier drei sehr schöne Malereien aus der Berliner Ausstellung:

Im Laufe des Abends geriet ich noch in Rechtfertigungsnöte ob “the works could easily be read as ferociously misogynist, racist, or brutally irresponsible“. Der Artikel aus dem das Zitat stammt macht einen Versuch.

Eher verblödet dagegen am selben Abend, die radical schick Deko auf dem Klo der Mathew Galerie:
